A pheromone is a substance that is chemical in nature and is produced by many animals. Humans also secrete pheromones. They are produced in small quantities. The pheromones are detected by a special organ called the VERMONASAL ORGAN [VNO] which lies between the nose and the mouth. The effects which these pheromones cause, the response which they elicit are specie specific.

There are different types of pheromones each responsible for a specific type of response. These are releaser pheromones, signal pheromones, territorial pheromones, information pheromones, sex pheromones and many others.

If we talk with respect to a human, a pheromone is a chemical substance that triggers sexual attraction between mates. Since pheromones are odorless, they are hard to detect. So humans use various pheromone products to alleviate their effect. These products range from pheromone colognes available for men, to perfumes and even body sprays. These sprays are known to contain human sexual pheromones. In animals also they lead to different kinds of response, they may aid copulation as well as nursing behavior in some species. It should also be noted that its effect is not very pronounced in very small animals owing to the size.

In totality, pheromones are very strong chemical compounds capable of producing varied effects.
